Is studying abroad the best way to improve your English?

Lis from Brazil is an Embassy London graduate from 2006 and believes studying abroad is the best way to improve your English.  She recently got in touch to get a replacement certificate to support her further academic study.  We took the opportunity to catch up on what happened after Lis graduated from her Advanced Level English course at Embassy London Greenwich, over 9 years ago!

Choosing a high quality school is crucial and a worthwhile investment. I've heard of friends that regret the decision for schools with less to offer.

What have you been doing since you left Embassy in 2006?

After I left Embassy I graduated in psychology at a University in my city, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). I started to work with children’s mental health.

Can you tell me a little bit about your life at the moment?

I’m applying to an academic program inside a hospital here in Rio. I love my profession and want to continue getting education – to be even better and better! Besides my job, I am a happy young woman, enjoying life with my friends and family.

Why did you want to learn English abroad?

I wanted to get better in my English skills, especially in listening and speaking. I also had the interest to stay for a while in another country, getting really inside another culture. Besides learning English in a great school, I was seeking a life experience to make me more independent, confident and traveled.

What’s your favourite memory?

My favorite memories are the great moments I had with all the wonderful friends I made. I got to know amazing people from all over the world.

It was great to be close to people from other cultures, that were so different from me, but, at the same time, so alike, because we were going through the same experiences!

What were you favourite places in London?

I used to feel very safe and comfortable in Greenwich. One of my favorite places in London is Notting Hill. I loved to go for a walk in Trafalgar Square and stay for hours in the National Gallery.

I can't express in words how much I also love the British Museum.

Would you recommend Embassy to other students?

YES, I definitely recommend Embassy! Studying abroad is the best way to improve your English, no doubt. I think is a wonderful way to acquire essential skills to act in competitive environments, but also to develop capabilities of cooperation and empathy.

I believe that being able to fully communicating in English made me more connected to the world and more confident to challenge myself out of my comfort zone. It’s a tremendous growing, that made me more prepared to achieve my goals, both professionally and personally.

Choosing a high quality school is crucial and a worthwhile investment. I’ve heard of friends that regret the decision for schools with less to offer. I had an amazing experience at Embassy, with really high level teachers that besides being very good at teaching, gave very pleasant, funny and interesting classes for students to attend.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m not sure of what the future holds me, but I know I want to work with what I love, and make a difference in people’s life. Traveling is something that I love to do, and I hope to study abroad again, maybe to get a postgraduate degree. I also plan to build a family and live in a place that I feel safe and happy.
