Building Futures: Nepal 2017

As part of a global education provider, we seek to make a difference by funding the construction of schools in disadvantaged communities. Through a partnership with Plan International, Building Futures is Study Group’s non-profit initiative that provides educational opportunities in the developing world.

Building Futures was established to help struggling communities in Indonesia after the devastation and loss caused by the Asian Tsunami in 2004. The vision for Building Futures is for Study Group to provide a long-term, sustainable commitment to educational projects in developing regions. Specifically, the ambition is to support communities through the building of schools and the provision of education materials and resources.

Our Building Futures initiatives are supported by fundraising initiatives, corporate and individual donations from Study Group’s staff and students.

Building Futures 2015: Sri Lanka

Our 2015 Building Futures Project raised much needed funds to build a school in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka to improve the quality of education for over 400 boys and girls. This included two new school buildings, toilet blocks for boys and girls, a hand washing station and a playground with toys and equipment.

The Building Futures project is a particular passion project for Luke Sikorski, Senior Manager, Global Product and Business Development Embassy English & Higher Education. Luke had the opportunity to visit Sri Lanka last year, and was present at the unveiling of the new school in early 2016.

“Having had the opportunity to be present for the opening of our 9th Building Futures project,” Luke told us, “this initiative is near and dear to my heart. We all remember the 2015 earthquake in Nepal and the destruction it caused. The school that our 10th project is sponsoring will go to providing quality education to so many boys and girls that will last for generations.

I personally witnessed the impact of what our fundraising efforts go to and I can’t say enough how big of a difference Building Futures makes in so many children’s lives around the world.”

Luke has also spearheaded a fundraiser at a local NY restaurant for Embassy English’s New York corporate office as well as the Embassy English New York staff and students.

Building Futures 2017: Nepal

It is estimated that at least 1 million children were left without access to school after the devastating earthquakes that ravaged Nepal in 2015. Our 2017 Building Futures initiative will focus on raising critical funds to repair and rebuild education facilities for the Shinhamati School in Kunchok Village, Nepal.

This project aims to build a brand new fully furnished 8-room school that will enable 286 boys and girls aged 3-15 to have access to a safe learning space. Our funds will also enable specialists from the National Society for Earthquake Technology in Nepal to assess the infrastructure to ensure that the buildings are safe against natural disasters like flooding and earthquakes.

Our goal is to raise 200,000 GBP (roughly $248,000 USD) by the end of March 2018.

Bringing English to Life: Fundraising for Building Futures

Over the past few years, Embassy English has begun to incorporate Bringing English to Life activities into its fundraising strategy in order to better inform and engage our international students with the project.

Our dedicated teams of Student Services staff, Teachers, and Activities Leaders have created a wide range of fundraising activities that involve our students ranging from Bake Sales, Nepalese-themed Lunch and Learn Sessions, Raffles, community events, and more.

Embassy English San Francisco has been organising monthly student events, and has also volunteered for a non-profit organization that serves Nepali food for the community for free to engage the students with the project.

Last year, Embassy English San Diego had a very impressive array of fundraising activities including two bake sales  an ice cream social, a change competition between classes, and a Giving Tree. The trunk of our giving tree was painted by students and teachers. It grew with the addition of a paper leaf every time a student donated $1. Each leaf was entered in a raffle held at the end of the campaign during our Halloween celebration.  In the end, their center raised more than $1,670!
