Summer is a time for fun, adventure, and friends. When you join Embassy Summer, you will create these amazing memories while learning English too! We asked one of our favorite Embassy Summer teachers, Wendy Chorlain, to share her story about teaching English in her hometown of New York City, and what inspires her about teaching the children, juniors, and young adults at our programmes.
Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see all of the exciting things our #EmbassySummer students are up to!
I’m from the greater New York City area; I’ve lived most of my life in New York or one of its outlying suburbs. I love New York because it has so many people from all over the world! I have completed (for the time being) my university education and now spend my time teaching. During my university days, I majored in linguistics and now I teach the ancient language of Latin to boys and girls in a New Jersey public school.
It’s very hard to pick just one favorite thing about my job at Embassy, but I guess I’d have to say it’s seeing students have that “Aha!” moment, when a particularly puzzling aspect of English suddenly makes sense. Plus, we usually have a lot of fun leading up to those moments.
I think what I enjoy most is sharing my language.
One thing that everyone seemed to have fun with was locating the homes of famous movie, TV, and music stars on a tour map of Manhattan. Students were then able to take the maps with them when they went sight-seeing the next day. We do a lot of “trend exploring”, finding out what’s popular in each of our cultures.
It’s taught me to see the world through the eyes of my students.
I think my favorite word is “surprise!” It’s kind of happy and unpredictable. It hints at something hopeful and it sums up how I see life.
