English in Action: So Yun from South Korea

Students choose to study at Embassy not only to learn English in the classroom, but also to gain invaluable language skills in real-world settings. Many of our international students are interested in gaining confidence and fluency in English to advance their careers to the next level. Our English in Action program in the USA is a 4-8 week course where students perfect their language skills with an unpaid placement in a US business, community or educational organisation. This week, we caught up with EIA student  So Yun Park from South Korea to learn more about her English in Action experience in New York City.

Tell us about yourself!

Hi, guys. I’m So Yun from Korea. It is easy to memorize my name as “ You are so young!!”. I like this explanation because I am not that young actually. ^_^; Anyway I came to study English here after I graduated from University.

It was really big deal to decide to come to NY for me. I can tell that it was a great choice in my life. I’ve enjoyed a lot here and I am able to get unforgettable experiences and friends. Come to the world of New York City!

What was your level of English before you started Embassy?

I was in intermediate level as far as I’ve concerned.  When I start studying English here, I was not confident of speaking English. I thought my speaking was poor but it was totally different than I expected. I could communicate with people in English, which was awesome.

Why did you want to learn English abroad?

First of all, I wanted to experience a lot of things including studying English. When I decided to learn English abroad, I was seeking my job and writing my resume required my personal history in Korea. And I wanted to describe myself as an international person, but I couldn’t prove that even by myself as well.

I had to figure who I am and whether I am an international person or not. That’s why I decided to come here.

What made you choose Embassy English?

At that time I was looking for schools where there is a placement program. After checking it out Embassy was the only one that I wanted to go because they have a nice program called English in Action.

I was into having unique experience with native speakers and Embassy made it for me.

What’s the best thing about learning English with us?

The best one is meeting lots of people from different countries. We could share our thoughts, culture and life, everything in English.

Most of all, I could get unforgettable memories with my friends in New York, which was fabulous.

Why did you choose the English in Action programme?

I seriously wondered how American people work at an office and I was curious if I could belong to there or not. Also I wanted to be surrounded with native speakers. So, why not?

It was a perfect option for me to achieve my near goal.

How has your English improved during your English in Action programme?

I’d like to say my listening skill has improved. To be honest I couldn’t catch all of the words but it made me stimulate to study English more. And I could learn many vocabularies while doing my projects.

How is English in Action valuable for your future?

Simply speaking, It may help me prove I can work internationally at companies in Korea. Personally I got good experience and met amazing team members so I can say that it was valuable time.

Furthermore, I got to know how to use Indesign program, which will be helpful to create several documents.

What kinds of tasks were you asked to help with during English in Action?

I mostly assisted to create and edit files and organized some documents. For instance, I analysed competitors’ Marketing strategies and then I made PowerPoint presentation for updating it. Plus, I made various design formats for social media content and profiles.

Also I could communicate with other people who work in different departments by e-mail or meeting face to face.

Would you recommend the English in Action programme?

I strongly recommend this program to people who are keen to have real life experience here. Most of all, you can improve your English skills especially listening and writing.

I could tell that English in Action program will allow you to get special experience.

What do you plan to do after your English course?

Well, I want to study English more. I still need to improve my English and this course encourages me to study more and hard thankfully. Then, I want to work at international marketing department in Cosmetic field in my near future. I hope that I can speak fluently without getting pressure.

What’s your favourite word or phrase in English?

Your efforts will never betray you!

YOLO is also my favourite word. “You only live once” That’s why I always try to enjoy my life and try to do my best every moment.

Experiences are my top treasure box. ^___________^
