My Embassy Life: Berfin from Turkey

One of the greatest parts of being a student at Embassy English are the experiences. Students come to Embassy not only to improve their English language skills, but also to explore new parts of the world, to take part in diverse cultural activities, and to meet people. This week Berfin from Turkey tells us more about her experience at Embassy English as part of our series, My Embassy Life.

Embassy English

My name is Berfin and I come from Turkey. I am a foreign trade graduate. Currently, I am taking General English lessons at Embassy. Before I came to Embassy English, my level was elementary.

I decided to learn English abroad as economy in Turkey is quite tough. Even people with master degrees struggle to find a job! I realised that taking and English course in England would open up more opportunities.

Besides, I believe that these days, learning English is essential.

I had the opportunity to choose this course through a family friend. Embassy English is so international and studying here is also exciting, so you really do have to speak English the whole time.

When I started learning English, I could only say a few words, and within two months I have made some progress and moved up to the intermediate level.

My favourite words in English are ‘Fantastic and Lovely’ and my top three favourite places in Oxford are ‘Oxford Castle’, ‘Christ Church College’ and ‘Starbucks Café’ where I spent a lot of time.

Learning English, I have to say, is amazing: you learn, without even thinking about learning! In class we use Internet, lots of books, we talk about different cultures traditional food and we speak to local people on the streets of Oxford too. The Smartboard is fantastic and very nice.

So far, my favourite memory is all the friends that I have made and also our communication with all the teachers and staff in the school.

I strongly believe that English will help me in the future, especially in order to communicate with people from different countries.

I would definitely recommend Embassy English to other students: look at my own experience, I have learned more in two months here than I did in four years at high school. It’s amazing!

Once I finished my course, I would like to go back to Turkey and find a job in an international company. One day, I would like to have my own business and maybe move to New York.
